The Practice
The space that you practice in is sacred. So respect it!
You have to understand that you are doing yoga also when you keep our voice down and show respect for the other people in the class. As the great masters say, yoga can be observed in the little things.
If possible arrive in time for class. If you are late try to be as quiet and relaxed as you can be. Do not enter during the chanting of the mantra at the beginning of class.
If you have to leave before the class is over, inform the teacher who will tell you when you can leave in order not to disturb the others. Do not get up during Savasana!
If someone is looking for a space for their mat, make room for them.
Prepare for the practice calmly and collectedly. Gather your energies.
Turn off your cell phone!
Don’t leave valuables in the locker rooms.
Take off necklaces, ear rings, bracelets and watches.
If you want to try a class, there are mats that you can borrow.
Don’t eat a big meal before class. At least a couple of hours are needed to digest the previous meal.
Do not drink during or right after practice. Drink one hour before instead.
Avoid smoking at least 30 minutes before and after class.
A shower is always recommended before and after practice. Do not use perfume or scented deodorants.
If you have any physical problems, inform the teacher.
The practice includes physical adjustments from the teacher. If, for whatever reason, you are not comfortable with this, inform the teacher.
It is recommended that you refrain from practice for the first couple of days of the menstrual cycle; rest instead.
If you have to move around in the Shala, please don’t walk on other people’s mats.
Be patient and don’t be attached to the results.
Respect your body and your current limitations. Don’t be lazy, but also don’t push yourself over your limit. The practice is about finding balance.
Always practice with a shadow of a smile on your face and remember “yoga is not easy”.
Take the fruits of your efforts with you home.
